AFRICAN WHISTLE

Picture
This is a whistle. It is from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It was made in the early-mid 20th century. This instrument was used as pendants. There are no cultural symbols on it.I think that it has a weird shape for a whistle that you wear. And why are there spikes on the top?

MY INSTRUMENT FIRST STAGE

Picture
This is a drum.I is played by hitting the base, the cans, the bottles or shaking. My group helped me make it out of a bucket. The challenges I faced of building it was that the cans made different sounds I overcame those challenges by hitting them at the same time.

MY INSTRUMENT FINAL STAGE

Picture
I created cultural meaning in the decorative elements i choose because i choose the Red Sox and patriots symbols as religion because we believe in them. The football and the baseball bat are common values in the game. The culture in those elements and how i incorporated them is that our culture is sports and the symbols of the teams are religion and the football and baseball bat are common values!

My individual part in my groups performance is to go second after Sam and Damien with a solo. It was pretty hard performing by myself but after the first time it was easy. I also had to dance while other people were playing. Other than that I did what everybody else did the ball trick and I LOVED Zack's entrance.

My Cultural Vibrations Report

My Cultural Vibrations report will provide information I have discovered about my musical instrument. The report will give interesting information about the design, the comparisons to older instruments and the traditions important to my creation.

Picture this: a five gallon bucket evolving into a musical instrument that functions and is also a cultural artifact. It functions as a musical instrument by hitting it to keep the beat or rhythm or shaking it to make harmony. Furthermore it is a cultural artifact because it is man made and decorated with several cultural elements. For example, the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots logos are identified in my culture as a source of religion because we believe that they can win and that they are the best. In addition the football, baseball bat, and the goal posts represent the common values and government because you can’t play the game with out them. The rules posted on my sports drum are also a form of government because it is one of the “laws” of football.

You’ll be shocked to learn that a bucket drum and an African whistle have many similarities and differences. To start with the similarities, they both are designed for their cultures. Then, they are both important instruments to their culture. Finally, they are both worn by straps. They are different because first of all, they are both from different cultures. After that one is an African whistle and one is a bucket drum. Last but not least they were both made in different countries my drum was made in U.S.A and the whistle was made in Africa.

My instrument can be used as a part of my cultural experience because a tradition my group has is playing at the Super Bowl. People would participate in this tradition once a year usually in January. The important meaning of this tradition is to entertain the crowd. We all dress up as sports players to help us entertain the crowd, because it helps us and the crowd focus more.

This was my report that included interesting information about the design, the comparisons to older African instruments and the traditions that are important to my creation.
