My instrument is a drum that's called a bongo. I use drumsticks to hit it so its a Percussion instrument.I used a one gallon and two, two and one half quart buckets on the side hot glued and duct taped. What i did is got the one gallon bucket and i also got 2 two and a half quart buckets and glued and duct taped them to The side and then i played and my bucket broke so i taped the inside of the instrument and the outside of it.

AFRICAN INSTRUMENT

AFRICAN INSTRUMENT.
This is my African instrument that's a bell.My instrument is from Africa. From Nigeria and made in late 19th and early 20th century. And was made by the Yoruba people. Also the Chiefs son wears this bell. There is no cultural symbols on this instrument. i think that they built a very good instrument that is easy to carry and looks like there ancestors but it must have been hard to carve and to build the instrument.

My Cultural Vibrations report will provide information I have discovered about my musical instrument, the drum.  This report will provide interesting information about the design, the comparison to older instruments, and the traditions important to my creation. Picture three buckets hot glued and duct taped together to make a drum.  This creation was made in order to make a functioning musical instrument and a cultural artifact.  It is a musical instrument because I can create rhythm and play it with the people in my group to create music.  Second, it is a cultural artifact because it is man made and has decorative pictures on it that represent my culture.

The culture of my instrument is American football.  The football theme represents my culture in a number of ways.  The phrase, “touch down” relates to the common language used at a football game.  It is said by the players to verbally communicate their accomplishments.  A referee symbolizes the government, they enforce the rules. The Green Bay Packers symbolize religion; many people idolize them. A flaming football, a helmet, and the team logos stand for the innovations. The super bowl trophy would symbolize and be a part of the traditions and the ceremonies.

Can you imagine that, based on an African bell I was able to create my hand made drum? There are many similarities and differences between my drum and the African bell. The first similarity is that they are both percussion instruments. Another similarity is that they are both used during special ceremonies. Some differences are that the African instrument is a bell, and my instrument is a drum. Another difference is that the bell is from Africa and my instrument is from America.  These are a few of the similarities and differences between my drum and the African bell.

My bucket drum is part of my cultural experience because there is nothing like a band performing every year on Super Bowl Sunday. As part of tradition the band will perform at 6:00 pm during the half time show. The performance is free and fun and the band even uses drums.

For the football culture players are required to wear pads, a helmet, a cup, and sometimes hand warmers. The hand warmers and towels are for the quarterback when it is raining. The players also need to wear cleats, and last but not least their team’s jersey.

Summing this whole thing up, I was able to create an instrument that was not only a musical instrument but a cultural artifact. I was able to compare my drum to an African bell. In addition, I was able to decorate my instrument with special logos and pictures that represent my culture. I hope you enjoyed learning about my handmade instrument and the African bell.

My part in the Performance was to keep the beat while everyone is doing there solo, and my other part was to throw the ball behind my back without it slipping out of my hand or hitting my back. Last but not least I have to do my solo at the very beggining which made me kinda nervous at the beginning but after I did it a couple times I got use to going first and now i like it.
