MY AFRICAN FLUTE

Picture
This instrument is a flute made by the Lobi people. This instrument is from Burkina Faso.It was made in the
mid-late 20th century It is used for musical performances and religion and hunting purposes.
The cultural symbols on this instrument are the shape itself is a cultural symbol it is shaped like an arrow and it is funny because it is used for hunting purposes I think that this instrument is a cool and different looking instrument from the other instruments i have seen examples are my bucket drum my bucket drum isnt shaped like an arrow i have never seen an instrument shaped like an arrow.

MY INSTRUMENT [UNDECORATED]

Picture
The kind of instrument it is, is a bucket drum.
it is played by hitting it which makes it a percussion instrument. The material i made it out of is a plastic bucket, 2 cardboard boxes and two tin cans.
The challenges i faced was that the  bucket cracked and i fixed it with duck tape......... twice! Also one of the boxes broke and had a tear in it.

 MY INSTRUMENT [DECORATED]

Some of the cultural things i added was the Yankee emblem, a baseball, a world series trophy and the word Yankee! Also I have baseball language on it you cant see it but it is on one of the cardboard boxes sides and it includes words like pitch,home-run,out,strike and others also I have added a baseball right above the Yankee emblem just recently.

Music Mini Group Performance.

My Part In The Muscle Men Performance

My individual part in the Muscle Men performance is when we do the ball trick i have to throw it to sam the right way and hit the right spot on his legs that it will travel right to Tannor.  [i have messed up plenty of times] At the end of the ball trick i have to throw it perfect for sam to catch and dunk between adams hands. Lastly i have to listen to adam while me and him are performing, because his syncopation tells me to go faster in my druming.

My Final Report

                                                       Derek Cote          FINAL REFLECTION

My cultural vibrations report will provide information I have discovered about my musical instrument. The report will give interesting information about the design, the comparison to older instruments and the traditions to my

creation.

Close your eyes and try to picture a musical instrument and a cultural artifact all wrapped up in one. Mine is in many ways. For instance it’s a functional musical instrument because it is something that you can play a beat or rhythm on and it makes unique sound and then it can also be moved around when I have to do my movements with my group. Also it’s a cultural artifact because it is a man made bucket drum with a lot of pictures and baseball language and is made out of a bucket, two tin cans, and two card board boxes. Some cultural parts are the baseball language your not going to see baseball language on a football drum.

Do you think it could be possible for an African flute and a bucket drum to be similar? Well guess what it is very possible here is how I know that. They are similar in the following ways one good example is they make unique sounds and can play a beat or rhythms on it. They also are both movable like my African flute is very small my bucket drum is bigger but you can still carry it around. Look at my African flute then at my hand made bucket drum and you can see distinct differences.  They are different because they both are played different ways like my African instrument is a flute which is a wind instrument which means the only way to play it is blowing into it and my hand made bucket drum instrument I made is percussion which means the only way to play it is to bang it. Also they have completely different details. The African instrument has basically no details and my drum is full of unique colors, designs and elements.

Try to picture in your mind half time at the Super Bowl New England Patriots vs. New York Giants in Miami and watching the muscle men perform with are instruments and movements. We chose the half time of the super bowl because it something that people love to watch all over the world the purpose of it is to entertain the crowd while the teams are taking a 15 to 30 minute brake. It is a tradition because it happens once a year during half time and is always on a Sunday in February; you should express your feelings or root for your favorite team or player by wearing their jersey, painting your face using the team colors.

That is what I put on my drum and how it is a cultural artifact and still a functional musical instrument. It also includes what my drum has on it from a baseball to baseball language. Also it has the colors my drum has and what it represents in its culture. That is how my bucket drum is a cultural artifact and still a functioning musical instrument.
