African Instrument.

Picture
This is my African instrument. My instrument is from Africa. It is a bell from Nigeria. It was made in late 19th early 20th century, and was made by the Yoruba people. The chief's son wears this bell. It is played when a new chief is crowned. There is one cultural symbol on this instrument. It looks like the face of on a king or chief on the instrument. I think that this instrument is really cool because is from a time where they didn't have factories to make the instruments so it was made by hand.

My Instrument (Undecorated)

Picture
This is what my instrument looked like before it was decorated. This isn't mine but this is what it looked like. I blow into the top and cover the holes to make different notes. I cut PVC pipes the made a slit with pliers and stuck a cork in the top. The hardest part is when you are playing and the cork slips and falls down the pipe and then you have to recenter it.

My Instrument (Decorated)

This is my finished instrument. Some of the materials that I used were PVC pipes, a cork, duct tape, and paper. Some of the cultural symbols and icons that I put on my instrument are the Red Sox logo to represent the religion of my culture because that is the team I believe in. I also put a baseball on my instrument to represent innovations because it got lighter over the seasons and has had an affect on the speed of the pitches.
Silent Movie Drafts March 017
My part of the performance was important because when we did the ball trick I had to do the kick trick and get it right every time so we would look like we know what we're doing. I also play in my mini group with Damien and we change our tempo.

My Cultural Vibrations Report

My Cultural Vibrations report will provide information I have discovered about my musical instrument. The report will give interesting information about the design, the comparisons to older instruments and the traditions important to my creation.

What’s blue and red and has cultural icons all over? My PVC pipe flute that is not only a musical instrument but is a cultural artifact too! It is a musical instrument because you can play music with it and make different notes. It would considered as a member of the woodwind family because you blow into it. Besides that it is also a cultural artifact because my group’s culture is sports. There are symbols on my y instrument that represent this culture. I have the Red Sox logo to represent religion, because believing in that team it is like believing in a god, plus the all star logo is on my instrument to represent tradition that happens every year. The tradition I’m referring to is that the M.L.B. has an all star game every year to determine who gets home field advantage at the World Series. There is also a baseball to represent innovations that made a crucial impact in the game. An example of this is that over the years the baseball has gotten lighter, which has had a crucial affect in the speed of the pitch.

Did you know that my PVC pipe flute shares similarities and differences with a bell that was used to crown a new chief?  My instrument is similar to the Nigerian bell because you can make music with both of them. Both of the instruments have designs on them that represent different aspects of their culture. They’re unparallel because they are from different places and are played differently. You hit or ring the bell and you blow into my PVC pipe flute. The materials used to build the artifacts have different designs on them. The bell has designs on it that makes it look like a face of maybe some kind of king or chief from the Nigerian culture. They’re also made from different materials. My PVC flute is made from PVC tubing and the Nigerian bell is made from metal. It is probably some kind of bronze.

My PVC pipe flute can be used as part of my cultural experience because we, the Muscle Men will perform our music once a year when the Super Bowl is played at halftime. A significant meaning of my tradition is when my group says pitch, score, dribble, and goal, it represents the professional athletes that play our favorite sports and play for our favorite teams. We all had to consider different aspects of our culture like baseball, basketball etc. So we chose our costumes that go with various aspects of our culture when we wear our costumes. For example we wear baseball pants and shirts and basketball tops and shorts.

That concludes my complex description about my PVC pipe flute. I hope that it becomes a famous artifact someday.
